Broader than any disability law that came before it, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act made it illegal for the federal government, federal contractors, and any entity receiving federal financial assistance to discriminate on the basis of disability.

Section 504 obligates state and local governments to ensure that persons with disabilities have equal access to any programs, services, or activities receiving federal financial assistance.

There are no specific policies or procedures that employers must follow when trying to accommodate an employee with a disability.

Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”) saying these words, “Let the shameful wall of exclusion finally come tumbling down.” One of the most important civil rights law to be enacted since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. The regulation implementing title II of the ADA was revised as recently as 2016. What does the ADA mean for state and local governments in the delivery of their programs, services, and activities, as well as their employment practices? In America, approximately 20 million women and 10 million men experience a significant eating disorder some time during their life (Wade, Keski-Rahkonen, & Hudson, 2011). Many more people may not meet the criteria for an eating disorder diagnosis, but have difficulty around dissatisfaction with their bodies and distorted beliefs and behaviors about eating.According to the most recent Diagnostic Statistics Manual (DSM-V), eating disorders are characterized by a persistent disturbance of eating or eating-related behavior that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food and that significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
